Note from JALANAN Director to @America Viewers

Dear friend,

I wanted to take a moment to thank you for join us for the special screening of JALANAN last Friday at @America. It means so much to me that you took time out of your busy schedule to watch an unconventional documentary, meet our colorful cast of characters and hear some of their music.

Ho, Boni, and Titi after their live performance that night

I’ve honestly never before seen such a warm, engaged, enthusiastic audience  at a documentary, and it was truly one of the most magical cultural events I’ve experienced in my 15 years in Indonesia.

For Titi, Ho and Boni it was even more special: in front of such a warm appreciative audience, they felt profoundly understood and wholly acknowledged – something that rarely ever happens to people from the margins of society.

Thank you so much for being part of that by witnessing their story and by making your appreciation known. I assure you they no longer consider you just a viewer, but a real friend.

Double Titi! Titi Rajo Bintang and Titi JALANAN :)

On Thursday, April 10, JALANAN will begin a limited theatrical release by Studio XXI and Blitz Megaplex in Jakarta, and then hopefully in theatres in Jogjakarta, Makasar, Bali and Surabaya.

All of us on the JALANAN team hope that over the next few weeks, thousands more Indonesians will take the time to watch their very special story.

As you know, it is almost unheard of for a documentary to be released theatrically in Indonesia. Documentaries are stigmatized as being heavy, boring, educational and way too serious. But as an early viewer of JALANAN, you already know that it’s full of laughter, heartache, irony, profound wisdom and great music. As I emphasized on Friday night, I’ve always felt that documentaries shouldn’t be afraid to entertain.

JALANAN has a very short window of opportunity: if not enough viewers go to see it, the film will be taken off the screens after just 2 or 3 days. But Studio XXI promised that if we get a lot of viewers, they will open JALANAN on even more screens and in more cities.

It would mean so much to me and to the whole JALANAN team if you would help us spread the word to your friends, relatives, colleagues and anyone standing next to you in line at the supermarket: “GO SEE JALANAN.”

Facebook it, tweet it, email it, plead, threaten and beg. We need all the support we can get. It’s now or never.

Here are some easy links to help you spread the propaganda like a pro:
